TOMI Environmental Solutions, Inc.supports this shift through SteraMist®, a universal and scalable ionized Hydrogen Peroxide (iHP®) platform designed for high-level decontamination. The technology passes a fine mist of 7.8 percent hydrogen peroxide through a cold-plasma arc, creating Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) that rapidly destroy microorganisms on contact. The submicron mist reaches difficult-to-access spaces without requiring manual wiping, while short treatment times and minimal PPE requirements let it fit into existing protocols.

This combination of efficacy and operational simplicity enables organizations to use advanced decontamination more routinely. SteraMist is already used for daily treatments in healthcare, scheduled decontamination in laboratories and validated environmental control in critical facilities. The same iHP platform scales from handheld and mobile units to fully integrated automated systems. Delivering Greater Coverage with Less Chemical

Originally developed alongside DARPA to neutralize biological threats such as anthrax, SteraMist changes how hydrogen peroxide is delivered. Conventional vaporized systems may heat 35-70 percent hydrogen peroxide solutions to create a fog. The ionization process used by SteraMist produces hydroxyl radicals while maintaining a substantially lower chemical concentration.

The resulting submicron particles move in all directions like a dry mist. Once there, they disrupt microorganisms’ organic cellular structures, achieving reductions greater than 99.9999 percent.

Producing that effect required TOMI to precisely balance BIT® Solution output with cold-plasma ionization. This balance prevents abrasive surface damage, leaves no toxic residue and enables application around electronics and delicate materials commonly found in healthcare environments.

These qualities allow advanced decontamination to fit more naturally into existing infection-prevention protocols. Straightforward application reduces training requirements. The mist’s 360-degree movement extends the reach of one operator, enabling facilities to cover complex spaces while making better use of available personnel.

Turning Reactive Cleaning into Prevention

The ability to achieve extensive coverage quickly addresses a persistent healthcare challenge. Hospitals must reduce healthcare-associated infections while managing limited budgets, staff shortages and pressure to keep rooms available. Macon & Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University demonstrates how targeted use can develop into routine prevention. The institution initially adopted SteraMist to control difficult pathogens in its vivarium. After observing its speed and effectiveness, it expanded iHP into clinical areas, where a dedicated team now performs ongoing treatments.

Other implementations show how the technology can complement established cleaning practices without extending room downtime. One facility reported disinfecting a patient room within 10 minutes while maintaining top ratings for reducing bloodstream infections. Independent studies have also found that adding SteraMist to standard protocols can significantly reduce C. difficile infections.

A separate facility incorporated the technology into a 55-minute ICU terminal-cleaning protocol. During the same cycle, SteraMist treated equipment, cabinets, mattresses and other room fixtures. After three years of using the protocol, the facility reported only one infection.

Validating Performance Across Facilities

Applying the technology requires confidence that its performance can be reproduced. Since becoming commercially available, iHP has undergone extensive third-party testing against bacterial spores, multidrug-resistant organisms, fungi and viruses. SteraMist became the first equipment-and-solution combination to receive EPA registration and is registered as a broad-spectrum disinfectant for hospital and healthcare environments.

Its documented performance also supports customers operating under FDA, USP and GMP frameworks. Applications span pandemic response, inpatient and outpatient healthcare facilities, cleanrooms, barrier systems and scheduled treatments for laboratory customers.

This combination of independent testing and operational experience gives facilities a clearer basis for incorporating SteraMist into their infection-prevention strategies.

Extending One Platform Across Industries

The same consistency supports environments beyond healthcare. Pharmaceutical and biotechnology manufacturers use predictable, automated microbial reduction to meet validated environmental-control requirements, including cGMP and Annex 1.

Food processors focus on preventing cross-contamination without leaving residues, damaging equipment or delaying production schedules. Commercial facilities and emergency services prioritize mobility, using systems such as SteraPak to treat multiple locations without complex setup or extensive labor.

Preventive implementation also carries an economic rationale. Cross-contamination can result in approximately $500,000 in biotechnology losses, while a single recall for a major food brand can cost more than $30 million. To extend this protection into more complex environments, TOMI is integrating SteraMist with intelligent automation, facility management systems and enhanced digital documentation. The platform is also being adapted for drones, autonomous robots, unmanned aerial vehicles, robotaxis and large-scale infrastructure. Its next-generation applications include work supporting NASA’s planetary-protection efforts.
