The idea for Prevahex began in 2008 when a vascular surgeon known for adopting advanced infection-prevention practices, presented a challenge to the Entrotech Life Sciences team at the Ohio State University Research Park. After prepping the skin with widely used chlorhexidine-based antiseptic, the site is typically secured with standard dressings. But most of these dressings provide little to no ongoing antimicrobial protection. Its protection gradually fades, leaving deeper skin layers and hair follicles, where bacteria often persist, largely unprotected.
Prevahex leverages a proprietary polymer matrix that stabilizes and releases chlorhexidine free base, targeting bacteria throughout the skin layers and hair follicles. Because pure chlorhexidine was not commercially available, the company negotiated with vendors, tested materials, filed patents and by 2012 began an extensive FDA submission, ultimately achieving clearance and adoption in hospitals.

Since its introduction, Prevahex has been validated through independent Zone of Inhibition testing under Good Laboratory Practice conditions. It demonstrated rapid elimination of multiple drug-resistant bacterial species, both underneath and 3–9 millimeters beyond the dressing perimeter. For healthcare providers, this translates to fewer catheter-related bloodstream infections, lower hospital-acquired infection rates and improved patient outcomes.

These dressings stay in place for up to seven days, integrating seamlessly into IV and catheter kits. Their transparent design allows visual monitoring without removal and accommodates diverse clinical needs, from peripheral IVs to central lines and surgical incisions. Among the product line, the Prevahex 1491CH dressing is among its most widely adopted configurations and shows twice the antimicrobial “kill zone” against Candida auris compared with other chlorhexidine-based, antimicrobial dressings.

Today, with rising drug-resistant pathogens and emerging superbugs, demand for chlorhexidine dressings has significantly increased. Hospitals and clinicians remain loyal to Prevahex for its proven infection-prevention performance and ease of integration into existing workflows.

Clinical adoption includes Stanford’s ECMO unit, which has used the dressings since 2017 with zero central line-associated infections attributable to Prevahex. Additionally, plastic surgery practices using Prevahex dressings on incision sites and surgical drains have reported zero infections, a critical outcome in the field where even minor infections can lead to excessive scar tissue formation, negatively impacting cosmetic results and patient satisfaction.
