Due to the constant growth of patients with undetected cardiovascular disorders, researchers have been obliged to revamp the whole scenario through the introduction of more innovative and advanced equipment, and the range of equipment has been dragged too far—from cutting-edge hospital devices to wearables to measure blood pressure. These days, the proper measurement of arterial stiffness has gained immense importance, as, often, it becomes a clear indication of hypertension.
Horizon 2020 is an intriguing project that has now aimed at the early assessment of arterial stiffness by accurately measuring aortic pulse wave velocity to cut low the risk factors related to CVDs. Under this project, CARDIS, imec, and Medtronic have introduced a cost-effective and mobile device to assess arterial stiffness.
This innovative hair-dresser sized product which leverages Laser Doppler Vibrometry (LDV) to make the proper measurement of arterial stiffness in major arteries comes with all the potentials to revamp the arena of CVD diagnosis. While operating this device, the user has to direct low-power laser on the skin of the patient in order to have the heart-bit pattern through the Doppler shift. The presence of silicon photonics chip at the center leads it to a different level due to the presence of optical functionality.
To reach the objectives of the project, the consortium has decided to go deeper by investigating and designing optical subsystems, and the Photonic Integrated Chip which comes with laser interferometer will become a crucial factor.
This project has enormous potential in the field of diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, as the partners have decided to empower the healthcare sector to deal with the prevailing problems and conventional risk factors related to the diagnosis process, and to enable them to offer properly integrated care relying on the evidence-based solutions.
Horizon 2020 can be considered as the most extensive program in Europe that encourages the companies to introduce relevant and innovative steps to move far beyond the social hurdles and to achieve the goal of a better Europe as well as a better world.
