Redefining Early-Stage Lung Cancer Ablation

More Lung cancer is being detected at earlier stages than ever before. Low-dose CT screening programs are being introduced worldwide, and this helps physicians identify suspicious lung nodules at stages where many patients are expected to live for years after treatment. That progress is changing the question around intervention.

The goal is no longer only to destroy a tumor. It is to treat the disease with enough control to preserve lung function, reduce treatment burden and protect long-term quality of life.

Nanotherm Therapeutics is developing its platform around that need.

It combines image-guided nanoparticle delivery with external energy delivery to create a more controlled, precise approach to focal tumor treatment. Instead of applying heat through a probe after a target is accessed, Nanotherm’s system allows physicians to first place and verify the treatment material inside the tumor, then activate heat only after coverage has been confirmed.

“Technology never sells. What sells is a solution,” says Dr. Georg Andreas Jordan, founder and CEO. “We think we have the solution for early-stage cancer that could significantly expand the treatment options available to many patients."

That distinction matters in lung cancer, where treatment decisions must account for both clinical risk and quality of life. Surgical resection remains a standard option, but it permanently reduces lung function in most cases. Radiation therapy must compensate for tumor movement and wide treatment margins. Existing ablation systems can also face challenges when targeting irregular tumor shapes.

Nanotherm is not positioning its platform as an adversarial replacement for current care. Its near-term focus is on patients who face limitations with existing options and need a localized treatment approach that can give oncology teams more control.

Building Control before Activation

The procedure begins through a pathway physicians already know. Once a suspicious nodule is confirmed as cancerous, iron oxide nanoparticles are delivered directly into the tumor via the same bronchoscopic or robotic access route used for biopsy. Dr. Jordan describes the process as a “reverse biopsy.”

Each nanoparticle has a proprietary coating that causes the particles to rapidly agglomerate once they enter the target tissue or nodule. These deposits become visible on CT imaging, allowing physicians to confirm the particles’ location before treatment begins.

“We are not monitoring damage after it already happens,” says Dr. Jordan. “We first control the positioning, and only then do we activate the treatment.”

That two-step model is the platform’s central clinical difference. Conventional ablation systems often monitor thermal effects after energy delivery has started. Nanotherm separates placement from activation. Physicians can verify particle coverage, add more particles if needed or remove misplaced material before any heat is generated. Only after placement is confirmed does the patient enter the NanoActivator system. The device generates an alternating magnetic field that passes through the body. Heat is produced only where the nanoparticles are located, allowing the tumor to be treated from within while limiting impact on healthy tissue.

Because the particles are placed inside the tumor, the heat source moves with the target during breathing. This is especially important in lung cancer, where tumor movement can complicate radiation planning and external ablation.

CT imaging also allows physicians to assess nanoparticle concentration and distribution. That supports predictable ablation margins beyond the visible tumor edge, which is clinically important because incomplete treatment coverage can increase the risk of recurrence. The particles themselves remain inert unless activated by the magnetic field. Long-term clinical experience has shown they do not degrade, interfere with iron metabolism or independently damage tissue.

Integrating into Existing Oncology Workflows

Nanotherm has designed the platform to fit within the procedures that interventional teams already perform. The system uses familiar access routes, imaging technologies and procedural logic rather than requiring physicians to adopt an entirely new treatment model.

“Wherever a biopsy can be performed, we can also perform tumor removal,” says Dr. Jordan.

That workflow compatibility is a major part of the company’s commercialization strategy. Interventional pulmonologists already use bronchoscopic and robotic systems to access lung nodules during diagnostic procedures. Nanotherm’s approach extends that pathway from diagnosis into localized treatment.

The lung cancer program is not beginning from an untested platform. The same nanoparticle activation principle has already been evaluated clinically in the U.S. and Europe across multiple cancer types, including glioblastoma multiforme, prostate cancer, cervical cancer and esophageal cancer. Across prior clinical programs, more than 200 patients have been treated.

That history matters because Nanotherm is now adapting a clinically tested principle to one of oncology’s largest unmet needs. Glioblastoma, one of the most difficult environments for precision intervention, required tight safety margins and highly localized control. That experience gives Nanotherm a stronger foundation as it advances toward lung cancer studies.

Nanotherm’s next clinical milestone is a treat-and-resect study expected to begin outside the US. Researchers will treat advanced lung tumors before surgical removal, allowing pathology-level evaluation of the ablation zone before broader FDA-focused studies. Nanotherm ultimately aims to pursue FDA approval before the end of the decade.

A Platform Built for Partners

Nanotherm’s opportunity extends beyond a single ablation device. The company sees the nanoparticle therapy as the core product, while device integration, cone beam CT alignment and outpatient deployment create natural collaboration points for larger MedTech partners already active in image-guided intervention.

That model is commercially important. Nanotherm does not need to build every layer of the global device, imaging and service infrastructure itself. Larger MedTech companies can support integration, distribution, maintenance and market access while Nanotherm focuses on the therapeutic platform at the center of the procedure.

The imaging layer also creates a practical partnership opportunity. Because particle placement is confirmed through advanced imaging, clinics using the platform will need strong 3D visualization capabilities, including cone beam CT. That makes the therapy relevant not only to oncology teams, but also to imaging companies and interventional technology partners seeking a larger role in minimally invasive cancer care.

A second-generation NanoActivator is being developed for broader outpatient deployment. Unlike radiation systems, it does not require shielding infrastructure or highly specialized treatment rooms. The device is designed as a compact system that can be moved into conventional clinical environments, creating a path toward more scalable, localized cancer treatment.

For investors and industrial partners, that combination is where Nanotherm’s story extends beyond thermal ablation. It is building a platform with a device ecosystem, with a clear first indication in lung cancer and potential expansion into other solid tumors accessible via biopsy-like pathways.

Early-stage lung cancer remains the first focus because the need is substantial. As screening identifies more patients earlier, oncology teams will need treatment options that not only control disease but also preserve function and quality of life.

Nanotherm’s value lies in bringing controlled activation, familiar clinical access and scalable outpatient deployment into one treatment model.
