Why is fixed-rate infusion design important for reducing errors and simplifying medication delivery?

Traditional infusion systems require clinicians to calculate infusion rates based on dosage, volume and duration, which can introduce opportunities for error. MonuMedical removes that layer entirely. Its approach with the EZfuserTM is centered on determining the overall dose and then adjusting the infusion time.

With this approach, a medication that needs to run for 20 minutes is simply diluted to 20 cc and delivered, rather than calculating rates or configuring a pump. The system standardizes delivery at a fixed rate (e.g., 1 cc per minute), meaning clinicians only need to match volume to time, eliminating up to 90 percent of traditional infusion calculations. A 30-minute infusion becomes 30 cc. A 60-minute infusion becomes 60 cc. No rate math. No programming.

In practice, this dramatically compresses the setup. Infusions can be initiated in less than 60 seconds, compared to several minutes using traditional methods.

“In both of the standard methods, the infusion system becomes another object you have to move with the patient,” Duncan says.

The device includes an integrated mounting mechanism that allows it to be secured to a patient’s clothing, equipment, or harness. This ensures continuous infusion delivery without the need for external supports such as IV poles or pump stands. The result is a system that aligns with the realities of emergency transport, field medicine and other dynamic care settings.

This mobility is particularly valuable in military applications, where conditions are often unpredictable and resources are limited. MonuMedical has already established contracts with the U.S. Air Force and is seeing growing interest from other defense organizations, including NATO.

Beyond mobility, speed is a critical factor in these environments. Traditional infusion setup can take several minutes per patient, especially when multiple steps are involved.

In U.S. Air Force scenarios, clinicians may need to initiate infusions for 10 to 15 patients simultaneously. Traditionally, this can take up to 30 minutes.

Safety through Design and Mechanical Reliability

The safety profile is directly tied to its core mechanism: fixed-rate delivery, which eliminates the need for manual programming or calculations. The device operates mechanically, eliminating the need for electronics, batteries, or programmable interfaces. This reduces the risk of technical failure and ensures the system remains functional even in environments where power sources are unavailable or unreliable.

“The device can never give meds too fast, because it always infuses out through a system that only allows it to infuse slowly,” Duncan emphasizes.

By standardizing flow rates and removing programmable variables, the system minimizes the potential for user error. The fixed-rate design inherently prevents accidental over-infusion. This is a common risk in manually programmed systems.

The device’s simplicity also reduces training requirements, making it accessible to a broader range of care providers. In settings such as emergency response or military operations, where personnel may have varying levels of experience, this ease of use lowers the cognitive load and becomes a significant advantage.

Additionally, the platform’s single-use design supports infection control protocols, while its shelf stability keeps it ready for deployment for extended periods. As a fully mechanical system, it remains shelf-stable for years without reliance on batteries or electronics.

While individual components, such as the stopcock, are FDA-cleared, the integrated device is progressing through regulatory pathways toward full clearance. Notably, the platform has already secured military interest and contracts, indicating real-world demand ahead of formal approval.

Expanding the Scope of Infusion Care

While MonuMedical’s initial focus has been on military applications, its broader vision extends across multiple care settings. The company is actively targeting emergency medical services, home infusion and veterinary care, each of which presents unique operational challenges.

“The biggest gaps in infusion delivery exist outside traditional hospital environments,” Duncan notes. “That’s where this kind of solution can have the most impact.”

To support these use cases, MonuMedical is advancing its product roadmap with additional configurations. Planned developments include devices with variable flow rates, allowing clinicians to select from multiple delivery speeds, including incremental options such as 0.5, 1 and 2 cc per minute, as well as more compact formats designed for specific applications.

Additional innovations in development include signaling capabilities (visual, infrared and Bluetooth-based) to indicate infusion status, as well as warming features for use in sub-zero environments.
