Reimagining the Future State of Operating Rooms

A well-managed operating room (ORs) not only results in a high surgical turnover but also reduced post-operative complications, improved patient-centred outcomes and greater patient satisfaction. While ORs contribute to both the workload and cost, they are also equally responsible for nearly 50 percent of the hospital revenue. It is one of the most expensive resources, implying a direct impact on the hospital’s profitability. However, efficient use of OR time depends on the allocation of staff and equipment, the time required for preparation and induction of anaesthesia, the performance of surgery, preparation of the OR for the next patient and other resources. And managing all these tasks at once can be a big hassle for hospitals.

Interestingly, this understanding has led MedEnvision—a reputed medical device producing company—to bring forth the Esy (which stands for Efficient Surgery) solution suite. It is a bottom-up, multi-disciplinary methodology that reduces operating room variables to optimise “ergonomics” and “parallel processing”. And the ultimate goal of parallel processing is the creation of a positive “Esy OR Pulse” which indicates that none of the team members is delayed in their consecutive tasks. Delays within the processes are thus minimised. Therefore, the Esy solution leads to optimised efficiency, improved staff ergonomics, optimal staff deployment, and optimised infection control.

At the heart of the MedEnvision Esy solution deck is EsySuit™. It is a one-minute draping system that saves a significant amount of OR time by standardising the draping procedure. Compared to traditional draping, the number of handlings with the EsySuit is reduced to a minimum. Besides, the incision window and foil are already integrated into EsySuit. This allows a standardised and reproducible way of draping which is a crucial part of an efficient and profitable OR. Notably, the EsySuit comes in 4 variations (Supine, lateral, table, and knee).

In addition to EsySuit, MedEnvision has developed an ‘assistant-in-a-box’ called Gripper to give surgeons the control over retractors without extra help from an OR assistant. By using the Gripper, surgeons are back in charge of their instruments. They determine the positioning, the force with which the retractors are placed and how long they stay in place. This allows surgeons to be 100 percent focused on their job because they don’t have to hold instruments. And since Gripper replaces handheld retractors, they enable OR nurses to be allocated for more productive and urgent operations. This leads to further parallel processing and optimal allocation of the OR staff. Studies have shown that the use of the Gripper can save 17 min per case which could lead to estimated savings of around $105,400 based on an averaged OR time cost of $62/min and surgeon volume of 100 cases each year.
