Hemolysis is the most common error during blood sample collection and analysis. Hemolysis can be detected at laboratories after sample processing, however not in point of care instruments. If hemolysis is detected at the laboratory, the sample is usually discarded and a new sample is requested since hemolysis induces unreliable analytical results. This creates increased lead times which can lead to delayed critical treatments. Since hemolysis detection is not integrated in point of care instruments such as blood gas analyzers, these instruments release erroneous results if the sample is hemolyzed.
