Rethinking Orthopedics From The Inside Out

When Selin Ariç stepped into her role as co-owner and CEO of Doratek Medikal in 2020, she brought more than technical knowledge. She believed that every implant should serve not just the body, but the surgeon working with it. With a background in biology and a master’s in nanotechnology and nanomedicine, her career spanned quality systems, regulatory affairs and product development. What set her apart in every domain was her perspective.

Too often, she observed, device design dictated surgical technique.

Ariç asked a different question: ‘What if product design were adapted to real surgical challenges, instead of limiting them?'

That shift reframed Doratek’s development philosophy.

Under her leadership, Doratek began prioritising clinical realities over manufacturing convenience. Feedback from surgeons became the foundation. As a result, the CE-certified orthopaedic device manufacturer now measures success not by the number of implants produced but by the surgical outcomes it helps achieve—minimal bone disruption, faster recovery and fewer revision procedures.

Doratek now leads Turkey’s arthroscopy market with nearly 120 distributors nationwide and exports to 77 countries. Its portfolio spans arthroscopy and sports medicine, spinal systems, cranial and maxillofacial implants, toe prostheses, hallux valgus plates and headless compression screws, each designed to give surgeons procedural flexibility without compromise.

The products comply with international quality standards and are certified by SGS Belgium. They are also approved by leading regulatory authorities, including ANVISA (Brazil), INVIMA (Colombia), COFEPRIS (Mexico), and the Ministry of Health in Ukraine. Its quality management system is ISO 13485 certified and a complete traceability system follows each implant, from raw material to post-surgical application, ensuring transparency and accountability at every stage.

Where Surgical Insight Becomes Implant Design

Questions like, ‘What slows procedures down?’ ‘Where do complications typically begin?’ ‘What could make a technique more intuitive?’ guides the earliest stages of development.

From there, Doratek’s R&D team translates clinical insights into precise product design requirements. Concepts are engineered, tested in laboratory settings and refined through continuous feedback from surgeons in the field. Once a prototype meets performance and usability expectations, it progresses into regulatory validation and preparation for full-scale production.

A clear outcome of this collaborative development model is Doratek’s patented product line. The Cerclage Band System is a multifunctional implant designed for sternum closure, fracture stabilisation and AC joint reconstruction. Unlike traditional metal cables, it enhances bone preservation and patient safety across multiple use cases. The Spinal Cerclage Band System, developed as an alternative to pedicle screw systems, provides more reliable fixation in osteoporotic bone and complex spinal deformities.

For sports medicine procedures, Doratek introduced the PressLock Knotless Anchor, a next-generation solution designed for secure fixation and ease of use, particularly in patients with compromised bone quality.

Every implant is designed to reduce operative time, simplify complex procedures and improve long-term patient comfort. In osteoporotic bone cases, these systems engage more surface area and distribute biomechanical loads more evenly than conventional implants. This addresses a persistent challenge of implant failure, which leads to instability, extended surgeries and increased revision risk.

“Such field-driven design has also made Doratek a sought-after OEM partner for global brands,” says Iskender Ersan, co-owner. “Because our implants are built to clinical and regulatory standards from the outset, they can enter international markets with little or no modification.”

Field-Proven Reliability in Complex Cases

A recent rotator cuff repair is a compelling example of how Doratek’s design philosophy performs under pressure. The patient presented with advanced osteoporosis. A common yet serious complication occurred mid-procedure. The standard suture anchor failed to hold the weakened bone, risking surgical delay and a compromised outcome.

To resolve the issue, the surgeon opted for Doratek’s PressLock Anchor. Conventional anchors may require re-drilling or upsizing, both of which can lead to further bone loss. PressLock features a unique expanding inner peg that locks securely within the original drill hole. The switch was seamless. Stable fixation was achieved instantly, without altering the surgical plan or compromising the surrounding bone structure.

While specifically engineered for patients with compromised bone quality, PressLock has proven effective across a wide spectrum of shoulder arthroscopy procedures. Its high pull-out strength, intuitive deployment and dependable performance, especially in high-stakes scenarios, have made it a trusted choice.

From Cadaver Labs to Product Blueprints

Doratek believes that innovation doesn’t begin or end with the product. It evolves through education, hands-on feedback and long-term collaboration and that philosophy is embodied in the Doratek Academy.

Designed as both a training ground and a feedback engine, the academy hosts cadaveric labs, clinical workshops, structured fellowships and post-market surveillance initiatives. Each program is carefully crafted to bridge the gap between product development and real-world surgical application, ensuring every solution is both technically sound and clinically relevant.

These programs engage surgeons from Turkey and around the world, with a strong focus on sports medicine, spinal procedures, trauma and foot deformity correction. Surgeons from across Europe, South America and the Middle East participate in academy sessions, gaining practical, hands-on experience with Doratek’s systems while contributing valuable insights that inform future innovations.

More than a training platform, the academy serves as a collaborative hub where engineers and clinicians come together to advance the science and practice of surgery. It reflects Doratek’s broader mission of developing cuttingedge implants and cultivating an ecosystem of inclusive leadership, shared learning and mutual trust.

“Trust, for us, isn’t built solely on product performance,” says Ersan. “It’s earned through consistency, transparency and shared values; principles that shape every relationship we build, whether with surgeons, OEM partners or distributors.”

Engineering Growth Without Losing the Why

Doratek is entering its next phase, preparing to expand and reframe what a modern medical device company can deliver through speed, sustainability and surgical partnership.

A major milestone in this evolution is launching a new production facility, slated to open in September 2025. Designed with scale and precision, the site will feature expanded sterile environments, automated workflows and digital quality systems, enabling accelerated delivery timelines without compromising on safety or regulatory integrity. Sustainability is a foundational element, reflected in energy-efficient systems and streamlined, low-waste manufacturing processes.

But growth at Doratek is as strategic as it is structural. The company is in the process of acquiring two additional firms, laying the groundwork for a future group structure that expands Doratek’s reach into biologics and strengthens its role in surgical innovation.

This forward momentum has already begun to attract industry recognition. Doratek Medikal has been named “Medical Company of the Year” at the International Quality Awards and recognised as the “Best Emerging Medical Company of the Year” by the International Brand and Vision Awards—testaments to both its rising influence and its commitment to advancing healthcare.
