What You Should Know About Orthopedic Implants
Alex D'Souza, Medical Tech Outlook | Wednesday, May 26, 2021
The medical sector is using orthopedic implants to heal the affected area or damaged bones.
FREMONT, CA : Medical devices that are used to provide bone fixation are orthopedic implants. They are often used in different body joints to replace articulating surfaces. There are some joints and bones that, due to damage, wearing out, or disease, may need repair. Orthopedic implants in the affected area or damaged bones are used to reinforce or completely replace the joints.
By using surgical procedures, orthopedic implants are introduced into the body. Highly qualified surgeons who have trained in this field often conduct these procedures. Whenever a joint has worsened past a particular stage, the damaged joint is removed and then substituted with an orthopedic implant utilizing special orthopedic instruments designed especially for the surgical procedure.
Most of these orthopedic implants are made of stainless steel and titanium alloys, many of which can be coated with plastic. The metallic structure provides the orthopedic implant with strength, whereas the plastic surface serves as artificial cartilage. The implants are usually fitted into place, and the bone allows to grow into the implant to gain enhanced strength. Few times, orthopedic implants are also often reinforced for enhanced adhesion.
Need for Orthopedic Implants
The cartilage covering the bone causes joint work. Degenerative joint conditions like osteoarthritis lead to cartilage wearing out and friction among moving bones in a joint. Whenever there is joint movement, it can cause irritation and a lot of pain. A source of cartilage loss may also be excessive weight and other variables. When additional procedures fail to change the condition, the doctor opts for orthopedic implants.
Different Types of Orthopedic Implants
In order to insert and place the joints in their location within the body, there are different orthopedic instruments. These processes use interlocking nails, safety locking plates, pins, wires, small/large/mini fragment implants, external fixators, cannulated screws, craniomaxillofacial implants, and other orthopedic resources.
Some of the body joints mostly affected by cartilage deterioration are the elbow, knee, shoulder, and hip joints. Implants are designed to resist the motion and tension associated with each form of joint. This will then improve the affected joint function and minimize pain while increasing the joint's mobility at the same time.
