On Thursday, Dr. Christian Dameff warned the audience at the Security of Things USA convention in San Diego that the state of the security of the data and IOT in healthcare industry is highly alarming. Dr. Christian Dameff is a faculty member at UC San Diego’s medical school and is also a white-hat hacker and expert in medical IoT security.
Technology is the central foundation of any kind of modern medical treatment in today’s time. The young generation of doctors is even unaware of the traditional paper charts system in the medical industry and might have never worked with them too.
Most of the doctors are aware of the fact that Software powers modern healthcare and digitalization have taken over. During the last decade software have become are as important as antibiotics, injections, and other scanners.
In today’s time without technical systems, doctors will be helpless and inefficient when it will come to emergencies like strokes, heart attacks, and traumas.
But according to Dameff, there are security threats in the usage of this software. They are connected devices used to automate and speed up the tasks of emergency cares but are unfortunately vulnerable to outside agents.
The patients are surrounded by dozens of wirelessly connected devices but they are still running legacy operating systems. These are used to medicate the patient but if miscalculated or altered, can cause this patient to even die. This current condition is dangerous and needs to be changed, believes Dameff.
Not only connected device’s poor security affects hospitals. Aging, unpatched IT systems are also vulnerable to several hacks, and notorious attacks.
Dameff said that when the hospital’s systems are down, it hinders urgent care, so patients suffering from heart attacks or strokes have their treatment delayed by crucial minutes or even hours. That can mean permanent disability or death. In these kinds of situations, a CT scanner is mandatory but it should e reliable completely at the same time.
He added that it is inevitable for the device makers to work with doctors directly, in order to bring in a new efficient approach to the creation of medical IoT gear.
