Individuals believe that the possibility of type 2 diabetes is high in obese and overweight individuals. Ironically, the research says that around 20 to 30 percent of non-obese people have diabetes. The occurrence of type 2 diabetes has shown an upward face in several countries. Type 2 diabetes arises as the result of insulin resistance that occurs due to the overweight and sedentary lifestyle.
According to the population-based study, the middle-aged adults with diabetes had worse conditions on memory-based assessments when compared to the non-diabetic adults. New research led by Michele Callisaya, from the University of Tasmania, Hobart, Australia, found that there is an association between the type 2 diabetes and cognitive decline. Around 705 people between ages 55 and 90 years undertook this survey. The research concluded strong association between the cognition and the brain decline of verbal memory and verbal fluency in diabetic patients.
The reason behind cognitive difficulties in patients is due to the lowered levels of blood sugar level. According to the study presented at the Endocrinology annual conference in Glasgow, the antioxidants can reduce the cognitive difficulties in diabetic patients. Furthermore, the study also states that the antioxidants work out well when experimented on mice. Previous studies revealed the information that lowered blood sugar level causes cell-damaging free radicals in the brain. When the antioxidants go into the body, it removes the free radical cells, thereby improving the lives of the diabetic patients.
A recent study by Dr. Alison McNeilly and her colleagues found out that the antioxidants reduce the brain cognition. They have applied the research in the mice affected by type 1 diabetes. During the research, one group of mice was injected with natural antioxidant named sulforaphane (SFN). The mice injected with SFN shows an increased level of cognitive ability along with reduced free radical cell damage. In insulin therapy, lowered blood sugar level is unavoidable. Hence, by improving the antioxidant like SFN in the human body, the side effects of diabetes like Hypertension can be greatly reduced. Researchers also use the drugs based on the chemical structure of the SFN antioxidant.
