OCTOBER - 202219It has been nearly 50 years since the first flexible colonoscope was invented, and the medical device hasn't witnessed many technological advancements in the last 20 years. GI-View, a revolutionary medical company, is changing the status quo through its innovative, single-use, disposable colonoscope, Aer-O-Scope.Aer-O-Scope's innovation is spurred by multiple factors on both the healthcare provider and the patient side. Healthcare clinics are faced with the rising costs of stringent colonoscope reprocessing, which requires specialized personnel and resources to ensure the equipment is appropriately disinfected for the next use. At the same time, an increasing number of hygiene-focused patients are wary of the reported occurrences of colonoscopy-related infections due to the re-use of conventional colonoscopes, which are discouraging them from getting timely tests. Since Aer-O-Scope is disposed of after every procedure, patients do not run the risk of cross-contamination, and healthcare clinics do not have to invest in specialized personnel for the reprocessing workflow."Despite being a step-up from conventional colonoscopes, our single-use Aer-O-Scope works in the same way as the conventional colonoscope and can be connected with the existing clinical equipment with minimal adjustments," says Tal Simchony, Ph.D., CEO of GI-View. The usage change is also negligible. As physicians are already familiar with the use of conventional colonoscopes, the clinics don't have to conduct special training sessions. Besides its simplicity in design and use, GI-View's Aer-O-Scope brings greater levels of visualization into colonoscopy. Until now, physicians missed polyps (abnormal tissue growths) hidden behind the haustral folds because of the limited viewing angles (140°-170°) of conventional colonoscopes. With Aer-O-Scope's extended 200° panoramic view, the miss rates might be reduced significantly. Combining the high-exposure view with external AI polyp detection technology, Aer-O-Scope can further augment detection rates, and potentially level the polyp detection results between physicians, enhancing cancer diagnostic outcomes. On top of these revolutionary changes, Aer-O-Scope packs in features like one-way valves to prevent backflow of colon fluids and uses a hydrophilic coating to reduce the scope's friction with the colon wall, all while keeping its cost close to one percent of the conventional colonoscope. These Aer-O-Scope competencies could empower physicians to deliver better colonoscopy outcomes and significantly improve the patient experience. The simple utilization and the significantly lower expenditure of Aer-O-Scope make it especially appealing to smaller clinics in remote locations. The clinics, which once could not justify the costs and complexity of colonoscope reprocessing, can now implement Aer-O-Scope and provide the much-needed care for underserved patients. Recently, GI-View completed a successful clinical trial of Aer-O-Scope with a 100 percent intubation success rate. The procedure was conducted well within the timeframe of conventional colonoscopies, with minimal training. Polyp detection statistics were in line with the multi-use colonoscopes. The physicians that participated in the trial testified that Aer-O-Scope's larger field of view improved their ability to see larger parts of the colon mucosa. The positive outcome of the clinical trial is now drawing GI-View closer to its commercialization. The company is close to submitting the Aer-O-Scope to the FDA for clearance, after which it plans to release the product in the U.S. The company will provide the products to ambulatory surgical centers (ASC), where most colorectal screening is performed.
