Although, orthopedic surgery is a skills-oriented profession requiring expanded knowledge acquisition to be effectively complemented with technical ability development. The latter process involves the repetition of movement in an environment that replicates similar conditions experienced during the actual surgery. In the near future, we will likely see the preparation of younger surgeons entering orthopedic surgery practice and experienced surgeons refining specific surgical techniques through several virtual learning technologies. Surgical simulators and virtual reality (VR) platforms have been developed to create immersive, realistic, three-dimensional environments that involve visual feedback from body movement. The technology has the potential to increase participant enthusiasm in the educational activity and provide the opportunity to demonstrate fundamental skill developments. However, at present, most surgical simulators help learners may acquire the basic motions for surgical performance but lack the tactile feedback necessary to reproduce safe and effective surgery. The post-COVID-19 environment will likely stimulate an emphasis for virtual technology development that, over time, will eventually mature to provide both the visual and tactile feedback necessary to recreate surgeries. Effective partnerships between skilled surgeons, educators, and software developers will be crucial to ensure that future platforms address surgeon needs for basic primary joint replacement and advanced reconstruction techniques. Virtual Reality platforms are here to stay and will require a learning curve inherent with all new technology.
