The traditional sterilization methods and legacy packaging materials such as Tyvek and nylon are losing ground and failing to keep pace with newer regulatory standards. With the introduction of more stringent regulations, medical device manufacturers are beginning to realize the value in determining the best packaging and sterilization solutions early in the design process. As more MDMs incline toward delivering products in smaller batch sizes for specialized, high-value applications, specialized packaging and less-harsh sterilization methods, such as nitrogen or ozone, grow in demand. Digital connectivity or Internet of Things (IoT) is adding significant value in the packaging and sterilization space via real-time transmission of shipping information during transport while tracking packages to detect shipping stresses such as shock and environmental factors such as temperature that can impact the integrity of devices. MDMs are utilizing single-package configurations across multiple product designs along with pre-validated materials and standardized platforms to improve efficiency and speed time to market. Recycling has also become a packaging focus for MDMs, as medical staff and hospitals strive to reduce the costs associated with the classification of hazardous vs. non-hazardous waste generated during medical procedures. Another area of advancement surfacing in the packaging and sterilization techniques is centered on automated systems and robotics. Constantly on the lookout for ways to improve efficiency in manufacturing plants, MDMs are turning to automated systems and are working closely with engineering teams to ensure increased productivity, optimized workflows, and reduced costs and lead times.So far, it has been an interesting journey diving into the exploration of novel packaging and sterilization solutions for us.
