Fortunately, the approach to treating such injuries has evolved in the last two decades from mere observation and selection of a topical dressing to the application of sophisticated technology developed from a growing base of scientific knowledge. Today, clinicians have the liberty to use growth factors, tissue-engineered products, bioactive matrices, mechanical devices, and hyperbaric oxygen to stimulate both angiogenesis and healing at the wound site. The industry is finally starting to move away from old-fashioned tape and gauze as the primary methods of closing and healing surgical wounds.Tissue adhesive is a new discovery that is helping both physicians and patients with better wound care because they are easy to apply, cause less pain for the patient, do not require a follow-up visit, and thus, are extremely cost-effective. But, one technology that shows immense promise is biologic dressings and biosynthetic dressings; they encourage autolysis and can help to create a healthy wound bed. Furthermore, skin substitutes, which consist of multiple layers that closely resemble the structure and function of the skin, can be used for extended wound coverage and to achieve rapid closure of the skin. That being said, nanotechnology is also making progress in the wound care industry in the form of smart patches that allow for continuous monitoring of wounds and even stimulate wound healing.
