Dec - Jan 20196Nearly half a century ago, in a society constantly invaded by new technologies, lasers were only viewed as an empirical technique, an academic study, or a futuristic project, as found in Tolstoy's novels. It was only in the late 70s that lasers started getting used for aesthetic surgeries, though its popularity had a stunted growth, until now. Today, the demand for laser surgeries has increased substantially among patients and dermatologists alike.The main advantage of laser therapy compared to any other conventional methods of treatment of pigmented lesions lies in its selective photothermolysis, which results in excellent cosmetic result with minimal risk of scarring. Currently, lasers are used to target cutaneous disorders of blood vessels, pigmentation, and hair growth, along with textural disorders, including photo-ageing, and scarring. Lasers have proved successful to lighten port wine birthmarks and other telangiectatic disorders of children. Coupled with that, the laser surgeries can also significantly improve acquired pigmented lesions such as solar lentigines and tattoos.However, it is also necessary to select the proper laser according to the location of the pigment within the lesion. Q-switched lasers are usually used for treating smaller areas on the skin. These lasers have a mechanism that stores the generated energy and releases it as very short, intense pulses with the pulse width in the nanosecond range. This extremely short pulse duration makes Q-switched lasers ideal choice for selective destruction of melanin, without dissipation of heat from the target to the surrounding tissues. The most common Q-switched lasers used today are the Q-switched ruby, Q-switched alexandrite, Q-switched Nd:YAG, and the frequency-doubled Nd:YAG.
